Characteristics of Hydrogen Embrittlement, Stress Corrosion Cracking and Tempered Martensite Embrittlement in High-strength Steels

چکیده
Characteristics of tempered martensite embrittlement (TME), hydrogen embrittlement (HE), and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in high-strength steels are reviewed. Often, it is important to determine unambiguously by which of these mechanisms failure occurred, in order to suggest the right actions to prevent failure recurrence. To this aim, samples made of high-strength AISI 4340 alloy steel were embrittled by controlled processes that might take place, for example, during the fabrication and service of aircraft landing gears. The samples were then fractured and characterized using light and scanning electron microscopy, microhardness tests, and X-ray diraction. Fractography was found to be the most useful tool in determining which of these mechanisms is responsible for a failure, under similar conditions, of structures made of AISI 4340 alloy steel.

A Comparison of Hydrogen Embrittlement and Stress Corrosion Cracking in High Strength Steels
The purpose of this study was to compare the known behavior of hydrogen embrittled high-strength steel to the characteristics of environmentallyinduced stress corrosion failure where hydrogen is continuously generated at the specimen surface. The incubation time for the initiation of slow crack growth was accelerated by prestressing for a fixed time below the lower critical limit. These results...
متن کاملDelayed Cracking of Metastable Austenitic Stainless Steels after Deep Drawing
In metastable austenitic stainless steels, strain-induced martensitic transformation during plastic deformation enhances work hardening of the material, increasing its strength and in some cases also ductility.1,2) The presence of α’-martensite, however, may increase the susceptibility of these materials to hydrogen embrittlement phenomena, for example delayed cracking.3–6) Delayed cracking can...
متن کاملHydrogen Embrittlement of High Strength Steel Electroplated with Zinc-cobalt Alloys
Slow strain rate tests were performed on quenched and tempered AISI 4340 steel to measure the extent of hydrogen embrittlement caused by electroplating with zinc-cobalt alloys. The effects of bath composition and pH were studied and compared with results for electrodeposited cadmium and zinc-10%nickel. It was found that Zinc-1%cobalt alloy coatings caused serious hydrogen embrittlement (EI 0.63...

iii Abstract: High manganese TWIP (TWinning Induced Plasticity) steels are particularly attractive for automotive applications because of their exceptional properties of strength combined with an excellent ductility. However, as austenitic steels, they appear to be sensitive to liquid zinc embrittlement during welding, the liquid zinc arising from the melted coating due to the high temperatures...
